Eden Tiltman of BALES Care Agency wins £50k prize fund for Young Start-up Talent West Kent 2014

by Lorraine Nugent, of Kent PR and Marketing Agency Media Word Waves

The winner of the £50k Young Start-up talent prize fund for West Kent was announced earlier this week as 19 year old Eden Tiltman with her company BALES Care Agency which provides both care companies and carers with the opportunity to find on the spot ‘supply’ carers or care jobs. The idea of the agency is to give care homes more stability with staff by providing a means to have extra help when needed as well as providing carers with more variety of work.

The evening was held at Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells where founding partners of the entrepreneurial initiative, Matt Turner and Lorraine Nugent along with headline sponsors Town & Country Housing Foundation hosted the showcase event which brought together a gathering from the business community, heads of education, previous contestants of the initiative and recent finalists and their families.

Eden said “I have learnt that those who love you and are closest to you will allow you to succeed in the best possible way for you; even if it was not the way they intended for you. My family and friends have supported me through my journey with Young Start-up Talent I could not have won without them, and if it wasn't for Hugh Christie Technology College forcing me to go to the enterprise day I would never have entered. Now that I have won I know that they will all continue to support me, as they always have and always will.”

Eden has walked away with £50,000 worth of business products and services donated from 30 of Brighton’s leading businesses which serves as a fantastic starting point to develop a business.

Judge and sponsor – Paul Roe – Partner of Reeves accountancy firm said “Eden had undertaken copious amounts of research, and summarised that into a lucid, convincing business plan. Given her assumptions, and the modest geographical area she will need to service in her business model, it has as good a chance of success as any start up business. That's high praise for one so young."

Jo Ellis of Town & Country Housing Group commented “It is a privaliged experience to be in a position to get to know the individual finalists and to see the transformation that occurs through the judging stages. The young people absorb the support and knowledge of the business mentors and judges who are assessing them. I know that the journey is as important as the end result.

Another judge - Michael Stevens – senior partner of Cripps commented “It has been inspirational to meet such enthusiastic and creative young entrepreneurs throughout the process and wish Eden much success in her venture.

Guest speakers included Jo Ellis – Group Operations Director of Town & Country Housing, George Cook – prolific entrepreneur and founder of many charitable organisations such as Computers for Africa and the Enterprise Foundation, last year’s winner – Mohammad Abusayed of SMT Trading UK shared his business journey over the last 12 months and live interviews with several previous winners of the project took place with Sam French of Sam’s Kitchen, Henry Rogers aged just 16 of Hot Iron and Natalie Evans of 42Juice.

The other finalists and runners up of the initiative were:

Karis Gill – age 18, currently in her second year of sixth form at Tunbridge Wells Girls Grammar School with her business – Katchspace – an eco-friendly artistic advertising business which offers new and creative ways to advertise organisations in outdoor spaces. Katchspace uses stencils and biodegradable paints that will naturally disappear after six to eight weeks.

Brian Cosham-Elam at age 18 who is currently studying at K-College in Tonbridge has created a business called La Bella Vita. Brian is hoping to transform the beauty industry by combining the three main articles of beauty – hair, spa and make-up.

Rajan Musha age 18 who is a student at Canterbury Christ Church University is developing a business called Stucial, an app which informs students about local events and special offers that are hosted by local businesses. The app will allow the user to be able to compare a variety of events to find the best one to attend on a specific day or week, enabling students to view all events in one place.
